چکیده

Artificial Intelligence encompasses the enterprise of building an intelligent agent. To this purpose, the notions of agency and intelligence need to be precisely defined. Much to our demise, intelligence has proved to be hard to grasp in a formal way. To overcome this, Stuart Russell— among others—propounded rational agency as an alternative characterization for intelligent agency. In his own words [9], “rational agents [. . . ] are agents whose actions make sense from the point of view of the information possessed by the agents and its goals”. Simply put, a rational agent is an agent that does the right thing based on its beliefs [5]. Naturally, the construction of rational agents is by no means an easy assignment; in fact, it is a large and complex endeavor. Software Engineering has a long standing tradition tackling tough projects. As a general norm, proper modularization has provided the key to success in these tasks. Therefore, different agent architectures have been proposed. The agent architecture supplies a separation of concerns, inducing a tentative modularization. However, at the present state of affairs, to build a fully rational agent is rather unattainable; several issues remain overlooked, or just partially addressed (i.e., addressed under too unrealistic assumptions). Rao and Wooldridge [7] underscore the following aspects:

A Context-aware Architecture for Mental Model Sharing through Semantic Movement in Intelligent Agents

Recent studies in multi-agent systems are paying increasingly more attention to the paradigm of designing intelligent agents with human inspired concepts. One of the main cognitive concepts driving the core of many recent approaches in multi agent systems is shared mental models. In this paper, we propose an architecture for sharing mental models based on a new concept called semantic movement....

The Psychological Impacts of Interacting with Nature-Based Design

Our modern society is filled with stressful stimuli that impact our daily lives, and lead to problems that eventually threaten our mental and psychological wellbeing. Expanding urban life and urbanizing people's interactions have drastically increased and resulted in more stressful circumstances. Unfortunately, the role of nature and nature-based design in our urban societies as an alternative ...

Modeling and Interacting with Agents in Mixed Environments

We adopt the decision-theoretic principle of expected utility maximization as a paradigm for designing autonomous rational agents operating in multi-agent and mixed environments. Our approach is based on explicitly modeling other agents, human or artificial. The advantage of our approach is that explicit models are the most comprehensive tools one can use to guide meaningful interactions. The d...

Instability and Irrationality: Destructive and Constructive Services within Intelligent Environments

Does chance have a role in intelligent environments? In this work-inprogress paper we argue that chance and non-deterministic behaviour can play a fundamental and important role in intelligent environments. We discuss how this behaviour can be both destructive and constructive. Underpinning our ideas is the view that intelligent environments may be seen as a complex system of interacting servic...
